We at Hope Shines want to make sure people who don’t have the chance to travel to Rwanda have a chance to feel as connected as possible to our mission, programs, kids, and staff members. Our Communications Coordinator, Amanda, recently had the opportunity to do a Skype interview with our new teacher and staff member for the after-school program, Cecile. We had a blast chatting with her about her life and teaching. Read on to meet Cecile!
How long have you been a teacher?
Cecile has been a teacher for 1 year and 1 month. She has really enjoyed teaching during this time.
What grade do you teach?
Cecile teaches 1st grade through 5th grade. Her favorite grade to teach is 2nd grade.
Prior to teaching at Hope Shines, where did you teach?
Cecile had an internship while she was attending university. She also taught for 8 months after university. She attended the University of Rwanda.
What made you want to become a teacher?
Working with kids made her want to become a teacher. She enjoys teaching children, playing games with them, and helping them become better versions of themselves.
What is your favorite subject to teach?
Cecile enjoys teaching English.
What is your favorite aspect of teaching?
Cecile enjoys debate class. During this time, she divides her students into two teams and gives them a topic to debate. She likes seeing the children applying themselves while having fun.
How is working with vulnerable children different than other teaching jobs you have had?
The difference is that these children have difficult and tough backgrounds and sometimes, home lives. She has to pay close attention to each child and know the different types of problems they face and how she can best help each individual student grow, learn, and succeed.
What are you most excited about this school year?
Cecile is most excited about teaching vulnerable children, learning more about each student and how she can help to improve their lives. She wants to make an impact and be a positive role model for the students.
What do you like to do for fun outside of the classroom?
Cecile enjoys watching movies outside of the classroom. Her favorite types of movies are romance.
How has Hope Shines impacted the lives of your students?
She loves the mission of Hope Shines. The organization has helped enhance the lives of Cecile’s students by providing support they need to succeed. Not only does the organization provide education and schooling opportunities for the children, but also health needs such as food, vitamins, and hygiene education, which help with their success in the classroom.
How has Hope Shines impacted your life?
Cecile has the opportunity to meet and work with the children and contribute to their lives, which she finds very enjoyable and impactful. She likes working through the challenges of teaching children, who need mentorship and a role model.
What is the best thing about being a teacher?
The best thing about being a teacher is teaching children new ideas, concepts, and lessons, but also learning new ideas, concepts, and lessons from her students. Cecile enjoys contributing to the growth of her students, in helping them reach their fullest potential and instilling confidence in them so that they will contribute to their families and communities. She is happy to be able to contribute to a better Rwanda by educating and mentoring the future leaders of her country.
