Join Hope Shines for a truly life changing experience!

"A Day in the Life"

Hope Shines summer camps volunteer immersion program begins before you arrive in Kigali, Rwanda.  A Hope Shines staff member will contact you periodically (by phone or in person depending on where you live) after the selection process to make sure you have all your questions answered and are prepared for your experience.

Once you step off the airplane, collect your luggage, a Hope Shines staff member will greet you and have the pre-arranged transportation bring you to where you will call “home” during your stay in Rwanda.  “Home Sweet Home” for Hope Shines is a hotel in the capital city of Kigali with western amenities – separate beds, showers, internet, common areas, a kitchen, and a continental breakfast every morning of your stay!

Hope Shines volunteers will hit the ground running exchanging money, organizing supplies for camps, and running errands with Hope Shines Staff.  On Orientation Day Hope Shines volunteers will have the opportunity to meet and get to know our local Hope Shines employees who serve as translators as well as mentors alongside YOU our valued volunteers!  This day will include a visit to the Genocide Memorial, meeting our children, and a Kick-Off Hope Shines Dinner.

Summer camps will start and end in the blink of an eye.  Every morning you will eat breakfast at the hotel, contact friends/family back home (through email, Skype or FaceTime), go for a jog, or whatever you want to accomplish prior to our pre-determined departure time for camps.  We arrange personal transportation to and from camps every day with personal drivers in vans/buses/cars and all volunteers will load up and head to greet smiling, happy children for a fun-filled day of camp!  Camp activities usually go from 9-10AM to 3-4PM and includes a lunch of local fare prepared by the Rwandan Cooks.

At the close of camp days, volunteers will arrive back at the hotel and assist with preparations/organization of activities and supplies for the next day’s camp before showering and heading out for dinner.  Evenings for volunteers will include dinner (not included in immersion fees) at a nearby restaurant and a local activity which can include a trip to local markets for souvenirs and shopping, visiting local art galleries, touring cooperatives or even the Rwandan Film Festival.  A day in the life of  a Hope Shines Volunteer ends back at our hotel for a good night’s rest to start all over again the next day…

Each volunteer will get a first hand experience in leading small group activities and coaching children in daily lesson plans in the areas of science, career development, arts, crafts, sports/play activities, and contribute to the annual Health Checks

Summer Camp activities are run and taught by volunteers and staff from around the world alongside local staff and translators

Hope Shines encourages our volunteers to challenge themselves to adapt to a different environment and cultural norms

Daily exposure to our kids, working alongside Rwandese counselors, daily cultural activities, and concluding with a Cultural Day Excursion certainly offers many ways to experience Rwanda

Immersion Fee 2018 - $1450 USD

Volunteer fee includes airport transfers, housing, daily camp transportation, all meals, daily cultural activity and Cultural Day Excursion.  Volunteers will be responsible for flights, souvenirs, and pre-travel vaccinations.
